BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (AP) - A Bellefontaine woman who knew her boyfriend was beating his young son is headed to prison for lying to protect him after the child died.

Thirty-three-year-old Skybree Schindler was sentenced to 18 months on Monday, with credit for 3 1/2 months she's already served in the county jail. She pleaded guilty to a single count of obstructing justice in September.

Her boyfriend, Anthony Barton, is serving 15 years to life in prison for beating his son, Michael Barton, to death in May.

Schindler said in court she didn't realize how badly Michael was being abused and was horrified when she found out. She apologized to the boy's family.

Prosecutors had asked for three years in prison.
