The Elida Bulldogs defeated the Upper Sandusky Rams 58-53 in Division II boys basketball district championship play Saturday afternoon at Ohio Northern.
The Bulldogs improve to 16-9 and advance to next week's regional tournament. The Rams suffer their first loss of the season and end a fine campaign at 24-1.
The Rams used a 9-0 run to take a 9-4 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied to grab a five-point after one quarter and seized control of the game in the second stanza. Elida led by 11 points at the half and was on top by a 45-37 count after three quarters. The Rams came roaring back, snagging a 51-50 lead with 2:34 to play, but the Bulldogs finished the game on an 8-2 run to take the victory.
Daniel Unruh, who sank four big free throws late in the game, had 17 points for Elida while Baylen Stinson added 15 points and nine rebounds and Drew Sarno finished with 10 points.
Upper Sandusky got 20 points from Jevon Dible while Wes Vent added 14 points, five rebounds and six assists.
