State Senator Cliff Hite (R-Findlay) introduced legislation wednesday affirming the rights of the millions of fantasy sports enthusiasts in Ohio and implementing sensible protections to ensure safety and transparency for consumers.

Drafted in coordination with the Ohio Attorney General's office, the Casino Control Commission, leaders in the gaming industry as well as fantasy sports enthusiasts, the proposed legislation updates state laws clarifying the legality of fantasy sports and e-sports.

"Ohioans love sports," said Hite. "We should protect their continued enjoyment of these games. At the same time, we must create thoughtful standards for the industry to protect consumers and ensure transparency."

The bill also puts important consumer protections in place, establishing a clear set of regulations fantasy sports companies must follow to operate within the state. If adopted, Ohio would join ten other states that have already adopted such legislation.

Senate Bill 153 affirms the legality of fantasy sports in Ohio. Reflecting federal guidelines adopted under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, the bill is aimed at addressing concerns about whether the contests are permitted under existing state law.

The legislation will now be referred to a Senate standing committee for further consideration.
