The Hardin County Sheriff's Office has issued a scam alert.

According to the Sheriff's Office Facebook page, individuals have received phone calls telling them they have won a cash reward because they are a model citizen. They say that the award is in partnership with Walmart, Apple and an out of state bank.

The award is claimed by the person purchasing Apple gift cards at Walmart then calling a specified phone number where the gift card identification numbers are provided to a program representative. Afterwards, the cash value of the cards and the awarded prize amount supposedly will be sent to the person being scammed. Of course that money never arrives.

The Sheriff's Office said the best advice as always is to remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and to hang up when you get these kinds of calls.

Never provide personal information to an unknown or unverified caller.
