Residents around the region have been the targets of the US Treasury Department and Tax Fraud scam.

According to information on the Hancock County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, there have been telephone and email scams in which individuals claim to be employees of the Treasury Department.

These scammers often state that they are from the “Department of Legal Affairs,” offer grant money in exchange for you wiring a small payment, or threaten to arrest you within a short period of time unless payment is made.

Their actions are crimes, and people receiving such calls are cautioned not to provide personal information over the phone, such as Social Security numbers, bank information, or date of birth.  Also, do not provide payments to these individuals.
