A train derailment occurred in Wyandot County Monday evening around 8:30.
According to the report from the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, an eastbound Wheeling Lake Erie Railroad Company train derailed at State Route 53 just south of County Highway 16 when one of the axles broke and damaged the railroad crossing.
The train stopped, and around 15 train cars filled with stones derailed and spilled the contents onto the ground.
The residents in the area were informed to stay away from the tracks in case more cars derailed.
The railroad company sent members to investigate. Also arriving were crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation, who determined that the crossing on 53 should be closed due to damage.
ODOT estimates it will be closed for approximately a week while the railroad company fixes the crossing.
