Kenton-Hardin Health Department is holding a Roll & Read – Powered by Parents as Teachers event, a one-mile walk, and stroller roll at Boy Scout Lake from 9AM-1PM on Saturday August 20, 2022.
The fun family event is for all families with young children and is designed to promote literacy and physical well-being.
The Roll & Read will feature select children’s books being read at points along the way by local officials, offering the fun and educational opportunities for families, including car seat information, Kenton Head Start, Early Intervention, WIC, a bubble station, and happy giddy tunnels. There will be prizes and giveaways available as well.
Parents and children can walk, bike, skate, push a stroller, or pull a wagon for a mile around the paved trail at Boy Scout Lake, as well as enjoy select children’s books at points along the way. The event is open to families with children ages newborn to age 6.
“Roll & Read is a wonderful event for families. There is great power in building social connections for families in our community. We hope families can join us, enjoy the sunshine, read with their children, and connect with others. That’s what this is all about,” said Tracie Marshall, Public Health Nurse at Kenton Hardin Health Department.
“We are excited to offer donations gathered from the community and working with other local organizations to bring a fun event to the community,” said Public Health Nurse, Darlene Ellis. “We were also able to have local food trucks available for food at the event, Smokehouse 101 & Jaeger’s Hot Dog stand, will be available for families to enjoy.”
Parents as Teachers is a voluntary program that pairs trained professionals with families in their home. It provides personal support for families from pregnancy through the earliest years of life, including:
.Individualized bimonthly home visits to empower parent interaction with their children in a way that facilitates healthy development and learning.
.Screenings to help identify possible developmental and other health problemsso that children can be linked to appropriate services or therapies.
Parents as Teachers is for new moms and dads, teen parents, or families needing extra support. Research shows that Parents as Teachers improves the education, health and well-being of families who participate in the program.
