The Kenton City Schools Board of Education conducted its April meeting Monday evening.

At the meeting, 5th and 6th grade students gave a presentation on the Leader in Me program they are involved in at Kenton Elementary School.

One of the students, 5th grader David Modd, talked about the club he is involved with, which is the debate club.

He said they debate a wide range of subjects, “In clubs such as mine, debate, we will debate stuff such as; which one is the better donut, chocolate or glazed, do video games cause violence and stuff such as that. Each club was required to do a service learning project or something to help the community such as the debate club which did a hat and scarf drive for the community.”

Board President Doug Carmean and Treasurer Jill Smith

School Treasurer Jill Smith informed the Board that the five year forecast for the district will be presented at the May board meeting, and she stated that she thinks Board members will be pleasantly surprised, “We are holding very strong, and that is because of a lot of these grants, especially the new ones,  that have taken the pressure off of our general fund. Even our food service fund is doing quite well because we got to defer a lot of their salaries into that grant as well, so I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at that.”

Also at the meeting, the Board approved the hiring of Caitlin Johnson-Ramirez as High School Spanish teacher and Sgt. David Clifford as High School JROTC instructor.

Also approved was the retirement resignation of Betty Reed as KES custodian after 30 years with the district.

Several other routine personnel items were also approved.

The Board then went into executive session to discuss the employment and other matters, but no action was taken afterwards.

The next regular meeting will be held on May 16.
