Kenton School Board Fills Coaching Positions and Approves Purchase of New Scoreboard

The Kenton City Schools Board of Education took care of  numerous end of school year personnel items at the Monday night meeting.

Among them, the board approved Zach Turner as head football coach and Julianne Dearing as Head Volleyball Coach and Phys Ed and Health teacher.

A fair amount of conversation was held concerning replacing the scoreboard at Robinson Field.

The finance committee reported that the total cost including labor comes to $75,000.

To cover the cost, the district would contribute $25,000 from the permanent improvement fund.

The remaining amount of $50,000 would be covered by sponsors who would advertise on five spaces on the board at $10,000 each.

The sponsor could pay the $10,000 up front or could opt to pay $2000 a year for five years.

Superintendent Jennifer Penczarski pointed out that the scoreboard is not being replaced simply because they want a new one, “I think it’s important to make sure everyone understands that our current system doesn’t work, and so we’re not just going out to buy something new. I give (Athletic Director) Brett Purcell a lot of credit, because the first quote for the scoreboard was well over $100,000, $125,000, and we have to do something with that scoreboard because it’s really held together on duct tape, and so he (Purcell) went back to the company, got a new quote and took it down to ‘what do we essentially need’ for a board, and so I think it’s really important to understand that it’s not a want, but a need.”

The Board voted to approve the quote from Daktronics to have the new scoreboard installed.
