Living with diabetes means a lifestyle change, and according to Deanna Carey, Clinical Dietitian, Diabetes Educator for Ohio Health HMH, it will lead you to pay closer attention to the labels on packages.

She noted that just because something says sugar-free, doesn’t means it’s not very high in carbohydrates, “Carbohydrate is that big fancy word that we hear all the time in relation to diabetes, because those are the foods that most quickly change our blood sugar. Those are our common pasta, rice, bread cereals, crackers and there are fruits, fruit juices and our milk and yogurt, so it’s still going to affect that blood sugar.”
