With the start of the new year, many people may be planning travel in the near future. There are a multitude of factors to take into consideration, especially when planning to travel outside of the country.
Information concerning the difference between a passport book and a passport card were recently shared by Tons of Fun Travel.
A passport book can be used for international travel by air, sea or land.
A passport card cannot be used for international air travel, but can be used for sea and/or land crossings. The card is for U.S. citizens who travel by land and sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and some Caribbean countries.
Both of these options also serve as a Real ID for passengers.
According to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, as of May 7, 2025, the federal government will no longer consider standard driver licenses and identification cards as sufficient forms of identification for air travel.
TSA will require a federally-compliant driver license, identification card, or other acceptable form of identification such as a U.S. passport or military ID to fly within the United States.
U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
