Ohioans can receive up to $2,500 toward a degree to put them on a path to a rewarding career in information technology and computer fields

COLUMBUS, OH – With more and more businesses seeking workers with professional-level information technology skills, Western Governors University Ohio (WGU Ohio) is offering targeted scholarships – up to $2,500 each – to help more Ohioans build a rewarding career in IT.

WGU’s new Tech Is Everywhere scholarship provides $625 per six-month term – as much as $2,500 each – to students who are seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of WGU’s 13 accredited IT programs. These scholarships are also available to those with existing IT jobs who want to upskill to advance their careers as well as WGU alumni who are seeking a second degree.

“From my conversations with Ohio business leaders, it’s clear that virtually all are in need of IT professionals to operate and maintain their technology systems,” said WGU Ohio Chancellor K.L. Allen. “Because the need for skilled technology professionals is so deep, we’ve created these new scholarships to help career-minded Ohioans gain the skills required to meet this growing demand.”

WGU’s Tech is Everywhere scholarships come at a time when there are 21,302 IT job openings on the state’s employment website, OhioMeansJobs.com. Nationwide, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment in computer and IT occupations is projected to grow 13 percent in this decade, faster than the average growth for all occupations.

Western Governors University was established in 1997 by a partnership of state governors to offer students, particularly adult learners, the chance to go to college while working and caring for their families. In 2018, Ohio became the 27th state to join the WGU partnership, offering a new pathway for Ohioans to seek careers in such in-demand careers as health care and nursing, business, teaching, and information technology. WGU Ohio currently has nearly 1,000 students enrolled in its Information Technology bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.
