Kenton hosted the WBL Wrestling Championships this past Saturday.  Wapakoneta wrestlers claimed six titles enroute to winning the championship as a team with 180.5 points. Celina pulled off second with 148 points and St. Marys placed third with 144 points.  Kenton, as a team, placed 8th with 39 points.

Senior, Anthony Hunt, led the way for Kenton capturing the championship title at 157 lbs.  Hunt started the tournament as the number one seed with a bye in the first round, but then scored a quick pin over Sam Mast of Defiance (1:19) in the second round.  In the semi-finals, Hunt defeated Dawson Ware of Wapakoneta by a 4-1 decision before facing Bo Hertenstein of St. Marys in the finals.

The first period started with some heavy handfighting and positioning before Hunt was able to score the first takedown on a counter single leg shot midway through the first period.  Hertenstein quickly escaped, but neither wrestler was able to get a solid shot off ending the period with Hunt leading 2-1.

Hertenstein chose to start the second period down and was again able to get out with little resistance from Hunt.  Hertenstein got in on Hunt’s leg at one point, but was not able to finish it before being called out of bounds ending the second period tied with two a piece.

Hunt chose the bottom position to start the third and Hertenstein decided to let him up making the score 3-2.  Hertenstein quickly took a shot, but Hunt was able to stop him, put him in a head lock position and pulled off a throw-by to a single leg to score another takedown to take control of the match at 5-2.

Hertenstein scored another escape, making the score 5-3, and made several attempts in the last minute of the match, but Hunt was able to hold them off to secure the win for the WBL title at 157 lbs.

Kenton travels to Clyde High School this coming Saturday for the division two sectional tournament.
