Kandy Lee (Powell) Shepherd
11/29/1946 – 05/26/2024
On May 26, 2024, the world lost a remarkable soul, Kandy Shepherd, who brought joy, laughter, and
love to all who knew her.
Kandy was born on November 29th, 1946, to Benjamin & Laura (Ish) Powell in Kenton, Ohio. Growing
up in Forest, Ohio, Kandy’s love for animals started young – thanks to a pet raccoon named Fluffy who
kept things wild! Sunny summer swims in the quarry with loved ones were always a favorite activity.
In 1962, Kandy married Roger Shepherd. In the early years of their marriage, Roger’s guitar and
Kandy’s vocals filled their home with music, entertaining friends and family. Together they built a family
of five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
Kandy took immense pride in her home garden. Vibrant flowers flourished under her care, transforming
the yard into a colorful sanctuary that served as a stunning backdrop to countless family gatherings.
Her passion for gardening blossomed into a fulfilling career at New Leaf Garden Center, where she
spent many happy years. Kandy’s life was enriched by the playful spirits of the many dogs she raised
and adored. In retirement, Kandy kept her mind sharp and vocabulary vast by battling it out in online
word games. Evenings were filled with laughter and friendly competition, playing hours of “peanuts”
with loved ones. In 2019, Kandy emerged victorious after her fight with breast cancer.
Kandy was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Laura (Ish) Powell, siblings Kenneth,
Francis, Penny (Powell) Reissig, son Roger Shepherd, Jr., and niece Laura Hurley.
Kandy’s resilient spirit is carried on by her loving husband, Roger, and children, Michael (Diana)
Shepherd, Varian Shepherd, LeeAnna (Kevin) Shepherd, and Jared (Miranda) Shepherd. Her
cherished grandchildren, Benjamin Shepherd, Devin (Matthew) Wallace, Aaron (Abagail) Shepherd,
Elijah Shepherd, Ethan Shepherd, Chanelle Shepherd, Reagan Shepherd, Hudson Shepherd,
great-grandchildren, Emmett Shepherd and Negan Shepherd; her niece, Lisa Bicknell, and nephew,
Tony Powell.
Throughout her life, Kandy always put others first. She embodied the essence of a caregiver, working
tirelessly without complaint. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love. She will be dearly missed
by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her Christian faith was important to her and she would want
all to take comfort in knowing she has gone to be with her Lord and Savior.
Funeral services for Kandy will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at the Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Kenton with Pastor Gregg King officiating.
Burial will follow at Dunkirk Cemetery. Friends and family may visit 2 hours prior to services at the funeral home.
Memorial donations in Kandy’s honor may be made to Not By Choice Outreach.
