Obituary for Rodney Britton

Rodney Britton, age 77, cherished father, grandfather, and pillar of the Ridgemont community, passed away peacefully on June 10th, 2024, at 8:00 PM, surrounded by his adoring family in the comfort of his home. His legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born in 1946 to Rodney and Lillian Britton, Rodney grew up in Mount Victory, where he became a beloved figure in the community. Harness racing, playing cards, and his dedication to keeping Mount Victory clean by collecting cans were just a few of his passions. Rodney was a man who epitomized community spirit and joy, always embracing life’s adventures with open arms.

After his graduation, Rodney was a carpenter for Britton Construction before embarking on a new journey as he established Britton Bookkeeping. Through his hard work and determination, he built a legacy that continues to thrive under the stewardship of his daughter, Heather Oliver. 

Rodney’s impact was felt far and wide. His dedication to education and community service extended to his role as treasurer for Ridgemont from July 1, 1978 – October 1, 1997.

Rodney’s zest for life was evident in everything he did. His warm smile and jovial spirit endeared him to all who knew him. Whether sharing stories over a friendly game of cards or enjoying a drink with friends, Rodney’s presence lit up any room he entered.

Family was the cornerstone of Rodney’s life. He married Peggy Fields in 1965, and together they raised three daughters whom he cherished beyond measure: Jennifer, Heather, and Stephenie. Rodney was not only a devoted father but also a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Rodney’s infectious spirit and warm demeanor touched the lives of all who crossed his path. His signature catchphrases, “See ya later, alligator,” “You can do ‘er”, “Remember who you are”, and “You gotta work at it” are remembered fondly by those who knew him.  

Rodney is survived by his daughters Jennifer (Mike) Grimes, Heather (Randall) Oliver, Stephenie (Shane) Jordan, his grandchildren Michaela (Micah) Heilman, Megan (Robert) Bevis, Raechel (Justin) Noble, Kuert Lautenschlager, Jennifer Miller, Rodd Jordan, Lindsay (Les) Rubin, Derrick (Kyle) Neisses-Oliver, Leslie Oliver. and his great-grandchildren Alina, Cohen, Jackson, Presleigh, Bennett, Grant, Britton, Jameson, Cooper, Lincoln, Kendyl, Kaysen, Gavin, Lillian, Harper, and Liam.

Rodney is preceded in death by his parents, Rodney and Lillian Britton, his son-in-law Rodd Lautenschlager, and his eleven siblings Bob, Bill, Freda, Jack, Donald, Pete, Ruth, Marge, Betty, Dorothy, and Danny. Though he may have left this world, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he loved.

A funeral service for Rodney will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Ridgemont Gym in Ridgeway with Pastor Jmac Geissinger officiating. Burial will follow at Hale Cemetery. Friends and family may visit from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at The Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Mt. Victory. The family has asked for guests to wear their Ridgemont gear and apparel to all services, as Rodney would have loved it. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mount Victory State Bank to the Rodney Britton Scholarship Fund, honoring Rodney’s commitment to education and his enduring legacy of generosity.
