UNOH Men’s Basketball Signs Local Standout

Posted on April 22, 2020

The University of Northwestern Ohio Men’s Basketball program has announced the signing of Ben Westrick, a 6’7 forward from nearby Ottawa-Glandorf High School.

The 6’7 forward comes to UNOH after a stellar high school career. As a senior Westrick was recognized as 1st Team All-WBL (Western Buckeye League), 1st Team District 8, 2nd Team All-Ohio, and named an OHSBCA North-South All Star. Westrick was also a 2nd Team All-WBL performer as a junior.

Westrick comes from a tradition rich program in Ottawa-Glandorf. The Titans, coached by Tyson McGlaughlin, were 25-1 and preparing for the Division 3 Regional Final when the 2019-2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here is what Coach McGlaughlin had to say about Westrick, “Ben is an elite athlete with a great work ethic. His attitude and will to win are key facets of his game that will translate so well to the next chapter of his career.”

“We are ecstatic that Ben has decided to stay in Northwest Ohio and join the UNOH basketball program,” said Racer Head Coach Caleb Williams. Williams added, “Ben was the guy we identified early on in the recruiting process and now to have him signed is a huge boost to our basketball program. He comes from a winning program and played for a great high school coach.”

The Racers are coming off a 2019-2020 campaign which started slow but finished strong with a winning record in the second half of the season and advancing to the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament. Looking toward next season the Racers return their top 7 scorers and top 7 in minutes played from last year’s team.

Williams continued his statement by saying, “Adding Ben to our already strong returning cast of experienced players, we cannot be more excited for the future of the program. Ben adds much needed depth at the forward position.” Williams also stated, “Racer basketball fans will love Ben’s athleticism and activity at the rim and how hard he plays. We cannot wait to get him on the floor.”
