26th Annual Victorian Christmas Dinner Scheduled

The Hancock Historical Museum is proud to announce the 26th annual Victorian Christmas Dinner, December 13 and 14, 2019 at 6:30p.

Each year a unique historic home is selected by the Victorian Christmas Dinner committee for this special trip back in time.

This year’s selection is the Glick-Etler House, a beautifully restored 1853 farmhouse located in Jenera, in southern Hancock County.

The Hancock Historical Museum thanks our generous hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan and Lauren Etler. The home was built by Lauren’s great-great-great grandfather, Anthony Glick – a German immigrant and survivor of the Famous Dove shipwreck.

For over twenty-five years, the Victorian Christmas Dinner Committee has taken guests on a trip back in time to experience what a typical Christmas Dinner would have been like during the latter half of the 19th century.

Through much hard work, dedication, and research, the committee has brought to life the Victorian customs of celebrating and preparing for Christmas Day. This year, the committee will also emphasize the German ancestry and country living traditions associated with the house.

Guests to the Victorian Christmas Dinner will enjoy more than just a meal, but a true experience! Guests will be greeted at the by coachmen and butler. Guests may tour the home prior to the meal while enjoying old-fashioned “wassail” and appetizers. A four course meal will follow. The meal will be prepared by Chef Jonah Agner, owner of The Food Store and Greenhorn Restaurant in Bluffton, Ohio.

Each guest will enjoy a variety of traditional homemade “savories” following the meal, including sugarplums, mints, candied orange and grapefruit peel, spiced pecans, and pulled taffy. Christmas carolers and instrumentalists will provide entertainment throughout the evening.

The Victorian Christmas Dinner Committee sees to the historic authenticity of every detail, including the many handmade decorations. Come experience the tastes, sounds, and aromas of this favorite event. The Victorian Christmas Dinner has become a treasured holiday memory for many.
