Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
The holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved individuals were free—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.
First celebrated in Texas, Juneteenth has since become a significant day of reflection and celebration across the country.
It was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
In observance, most banks and government offices are closed today, and there is no mail delivery.
