Alger Village Council members voted to use the Regional Income Tax Agency’s legal department to pursue three delinquent income tax cases for the village.

At the Monday night council meeting, it was pointed out there are three cases with a total outstanding balance of just over $3000, and using RITA to pursue collection attempts, up to and including legal filings, would save the village money compared to pursuing the cases on its own.

Another option was to simply allow RITA to send letters to the account holders attempting to collect the debt until the statute of limitations is reached and the cases are dismissed.

Council as a whole felt that would send the wrong message to taxpayers.

They feel it is better to pursue legal action to encourage everyone to pay their taxes.

Council praised village residents, saying that the majority of them pay their taxes.

The motion to use RITA to pursue the delinquent cases was passed with a unanimous vote.
