The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife established a Disease Surveillance Area that includes Hardin, Wyandot and Marion Counties.

That was established in June of 2021 when Chronic Wasting Disease was confirmed in deer taken in Wyandot County.

It was expanded to include all three counties in 2022, and Hardin County Wildlife Officer Ryan Kennedy said as a result, hunters in the three counties will get a jump start on the deer archery season, “The season will actually come in September 10, so you’re going to get a couple of weeks head start because for the rest of the state, it doesn’t come in until the (September) 24th. The reason for that is to encourage more deer to be harvested, and we’re going to give our hunters a couple of weeks in advance to get out there in those three counties where we detected this disease.”
