(L-R: Chad Thrush and Chuck Moore)

Superintendent of Kenton City Schools and Rotarian, Chad Thrush hosted Chuck Moore, Physical Education and Conservation teacher.

The Conservation class is an elective course and is its second year at Kenton High School.

It began with a relationship that developed with Mr. Moore and the Ohio Sportsman group. The curriculum centers on wildlife conservation and the outdoor recreation activities that financially support the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, such as hunting, fishing, trapping, conservation work, shooting sports , boating, Wild game processing, Wild Game Cooking, Taxidermy; and how they directly benefit habitat enhancement , protection and wildlife management, including game, nongame and endangered species. Popular with students it has a waiting list to take the course. Students and parents agree that the course is valuable. Students build an understanding of science content and scientific techniques taught through conservation with hands-on, real-world activities. The program has drawn attention from Ohio schools and even interest from different states. Partnerships are paramount to the class’s success.

Cabela’s, Kenton TSC have provided donations of camping, hunting, trapping, fishing and boating gear as well as opportunities to apply for and receive grant dollars.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources have also provided grant funding for the program.
