A suspect apparently committed suicide after a shooting incident in Allen County’s Shawnee Township early Sunday morning.

According to a release, officers from the Shawnee Township Police Department and deputies from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence in the 4000 block of Shawnee Road in reference to a domestic disturbance that included a shot being fired.

Upon arrival, officers and deputies stopped their cruisers in front of the residence, and while gathering behind the cruisers to plan their approach, a male suspect exited the residence and opened fire on the cruisers.

At least one police cruiser was struck multiple times and disabled.

The suspect retreated back into the residence and had limited contact with law enforcement, other than repeatedly threatening to kill officers and himself.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team with trained negotiators arrived on scene at around 4 Sunday morning, and the suspect continued making threats to shoot officers and himself and was adamant that the standoff would end in that manner.

Eventually the SWAT team was ordered to breach the residence and secure the suspect, and upon doing so they found him deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information has been released at this time.
