Marion County Central Dispatch has seen an enormous uptick in IRS related scam calls over the last few weeks.

This past Monday, the center received approximately 25 calls on IRS scams and that number was higher on Tuesday.

The Marion Police Department is asking residents to take a moment and get familiar with what a legitimate contact will and will not look like from the IRS by visiting: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/avoid-scams-know-the-facts-on-how-the-irs-contacts-taxpayers?fbclid=IwAR2w9X6ziIT0TsQ04I4pbkeT7DG4rEZnHlLiP5_8el9KtawsFpjvqvRZcms

The calls are quite consistent where the scammer is claiming to be with the IRS and that they are trying to collect a tax debt.

The scammers are threatening the issuance of subpoenas and jail time if the victim does not pay now.

This is not how the IRS works.
