A Marion Police Officer’s alertness may have prevented a very bad situation at an establishment in Marion this week.

While inside the establishment to serve a warrant on another individual, the officer noticed a different individual who was behaving suspiciously.

The man quickly entered an “employees only” area, and the Officer stepped in and found that the individual was being confronted by an employee.

The man took off running, but he was arrested after a short foot pursuit .

During the arrest, it was determined that the male was holding a loaded pistol and also had an additional high capacity magazine.

Last night, some of our officers went to a local establishment to conduct a warrant check after they located a vehicle in the parking lot in which this person is known to be an occupant. While they were inside, Officer Geurkink’s attention was drawn to a different individual who was behaving suspiciously. The male quickly entered an “employees only” area. Officer Geurkink stepped into that employees area and found that the male was being confronted by an employee. The male was holding an object in his pocket. As Officer Geurkink was speaking with him, the male took off running. The pursuit was quickly ended by Officer Geurkink and Officer Galyk, who took the male to the ground and arrested him. During the arrest, it was determined that the male was holding a loaded pistol and also had an additional high capacity magazine. We are grateful this did not end any worse than it did. Great work to Officer Geurkink and Officer Galyk for taking a dangerous individual off the street!!!
