The Hardin County Board of Developmental Disabilities is encouraging the public to Trick or Treat with inclusion this Halloween.
That initiative aims to make the celebration welcoming for all children, regardless of their abilities.
A child grabbing more than one piece of candy might have poor fine motor skills. One who doesn’t say “Trick or Treat” or “Thank you” could be nonverbal. A child who looks disappointed at a candy bowl may have a food allergy, while a child without a costume could have Sensory Processing Disorder or Autism.
Even someone who appears older but is trick-or-treating might be developmentally delayed.
The board’s message is simple — be accepting, patient, and kind — ensuring that Halloween fun is for everyone.
