On Saturday, 7 March, the Kenton Junior Officers’ Reserve Training Corps (JROTC) drill and marksmanship teams traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and competed against teams from neighboring states. This was JROTC’s buildup for the 7th Brigade competition at Fort Knox on 14 March.  7th Brigade’s competition will include drill, color guard, marksmanship, academic, and Raider competitions.

JROTC’s marksmanship team, commanded by cadet Presley Poling, continues to distinguish itself in its build-up for Brigade. The team placed 3rd overall, and Presley led the way by shooting 1st place overall individual, 1st place kneeling, and 3rd place prone. Cadet Logan Sherrer is improving every week, and officials said it paid off this weekend. Logan finished second overall in individual competition.

The drill team competed in both armed and unarmed platoon drill regulation and inspection.  Although the armed and unarmed teams did not place, they looked great and learned what they need to focus on for Brigade.  Officials also gave thanks to cadets Sherrer and Wall for accepting the “Mantle of Leadership” and stepping up to command a platoon. They stated that command is not easy, and not everyone is willing to accept the challenge.

The Wildcat Battalion cadre also recognized the professionalism and teamwork many cadets have been demonstrating.  Across the board, leadership is raising standards, fostering a healthy culture, and demonstrating a strong work ethic.  To make the battalion stronger, they still need people to step up and become more active in the teams.  The unit is built after school through the camaraderie developed within their teams and extracurriculars.  To truly have fun in the corps, cadets must get involved.
