The Kenton Lions Club held its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 18th, at the Kenton Elks. The meeting was called to order at 6:28 pm by Lion President Brad Bailey with 19 members and one guest present. President Lion Brad led the pledge and the prayer. The meeting was adjourned for a meal and called back to order at 6:59 pm.
Guest Speaker: Jeff Dorsey, President/Founder of “Warriors for Dogs” started walking dogs after the Hardin County Sheriff’s office took over the Dog Pound. He started walking 17 dogs one day and realized he needed help. Several volunteers answered the call to help enhance the quality of life with bathing, walking, and socializing very terrified dogs brought into the shelter.
There is an advisory board of 15 members who help people with vet bills and find homes for dogs with a rate of 75% getting re-homed. Jeff shared his vision for a new facility and after getting plans drawn up and estimates from two architecture firms, he decided to look at vacant properties.
His building plan from a firm in Boulder, CO would have 12,000 square feet of space, 24 indoor/outdoor pens, and an 8th mile indoor track with a dog park in the center; a boarding area, grooming and training area. The former Morton Building property has caught his attention with the potential to have outdoor space for dogs, a separate quarantine building for dogs brought in (currently the dog pound only has a small separate room), the potential to add a subsidised vet clinic and a warehouse to store dog food and supplies. He added that buildings used for housing dogs would need sound proofing, calm lighting, and epoxy floors.
Jeff concluded his presentation by answering questions from members and reminded members about the Warriors for Dogs Facebook page where people can see where dogs need rehomed and how to donate to their cause.
For Committee Reports, Lion Tracy Anderson reminded members that the Golf Outing event is on May16th and to start asking businesses for ($50) Hole Sponsors and will share last year’s list. Lion Joe Landsburg offered to donate two bottles of wine for the wine/bourbon gift basket raffle. Lion Joe Burbacher informed members that limbs need to be picked up at Pioneer Park. After discussion by members, Lion President Lion Brad Bailey set a clean-up date for Friday, March 27th from 3-5 at the park.
Lion President Brad thanked Lion Todd Oates for his work on the Lion’s Roar show and members applauded. Members discussed what went well, and things to improve on. Lion Kirk also mentioned the help from Kolt Buckenroth with the new tech in the KMHS Performing Arts Center, which members discussed how to thank him.
In Old Business, Lion Joe Landsburg asked Lions for their help with concessions at the Little League Ball Fields over Father’s Day Weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun). Members asked questions and discussed taking shifts. Lion Joe Landsburg said he’ll return in April with more information.
