There will be private family graveside services at Dunkirk Cemetery for Mr. Carl E. Southward, of Dunkirk, Ohio.
The Price-McElroy Funeral Home in Kenton is assisting the family with arrangements.
He passed away on January 15, 2021, at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay. He was 86.
Carl was born on March 8, 1934 in Wharton, OH to George and Ruthella (Horner) Southward. On August 16, 1952, Carl married Jean Elaine Hines (preceded in death, 2012) and they had 3 children.
Carl is survived by 2 of his children, Nancy Matson (husband Thomas) of Dola, OH and Mark Southward (wife Vicki) of Dunkirk, OH; siblings, Donny Southward (wife Bev) of Forest, OH and Elinor Hites of Upper Sandusky, OH; 4 grandchildren, Brian Matson (wife Jackie) of Bluffton, OH, Justin Matson (wife Jennifer) of Convoy, OH, Amanda Morrison (husband Joe) of Dola, OH, and Blake Southward (wife Melissa) of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren, Logan, Zoey, Ryker, Ellery, Adalyn, Elliott, Samuel, and Evelyn. He is preceded in death by his son, Michael Southward.
Carl worked in a variety of roles for many companies during his working life. These roles included working for Cooper Tire, Prudential Insurance, Morton Buildings, Sears Appliance Repair, and Hardin Northern public school where he drove school bus. His passion later in life, in addition to spending time with family, was traveling the country with his wife Jean. After retiring, Carl and Jean toured the United States in their RV during the winter months. They planned their routes very carefully, months in advance, and met their many friends at stops along the way. It brought both Carl and Jean great joy.
Two memorial funds will be set up in Carl’s honor. The first will be a memorial fund for the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis in honor of his daughter Nancy who has struggled with the disease for many years. The second fund will be set up to benefit the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology Department in honor of his Great-Grandson, Samuel, who is currently being treated there for Leukemia. Donations may be sent to the funeral home.
