Donald Eugene “Don” Conkle, 90 of Kenton, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at his residence. He was born in Wapakoneta on December 23, 1933 to the late Daniel R. and Susanna J. (Lear) Conkle.
Don graduated from Kenton High School, Class of 1951. He married Donna Treen on June 7, 1958 and she preceded him in death on September 19, 2022. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force (’52-’56) during the Korean conflict serving with the 3591st A&E weapons maintenance squadron. Following his service in the Air Force, he enlisted with the US Air Force Reserve (’56-’62) 112th Tactical Fighter Squadron weapons maintenance supply. In 1962, he enlisted with the USAF Air National Guards 180th supply squadron where he was an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Tech with the rank of Master Sergeant until retirement in 1966. He was the owner of Conkle Florist for over 20 years.
Don is survived by his sons, Tim (Annie) Conkle and Andy (Betty Jo) Conkle of Hilliard; daughters, Judy Wells and Wendy (Randy) Cook of Sarasota, FL. Don is also survived by his brother, Robert (Cheryl) Conkle of McComb; sister, Catherine Businger of Jenera; grandchildren, Aaron (Kristen) Conkle, Katlyn Conkle, Michael Conkle, Andrija Conkle, Evan Conkle, Eric Conkle, Emily Conkle and great- grandchildren, Jordyn and Carson Conkle. Don was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Dan Wells; brother, Paul Conkle and wife Ruth; sisters, Jeanne Dunn, Mary Alice King and brothers-in-law, Orland King and Eldon Businger.
Don was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was previously a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kenton Lions Club and a life member of the Moose Lodge. Don loved baseball and was a Little League umpire for over 40 years in both Kenton and Florida. He umpired in the Junior League World Series.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2024 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kenton. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by the Kenton Amvets Post 1994. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Don to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or Universal Home Health and Hospice.
