Horace Eugene “Gene” Chandler at age 89 of Upper Sandusky died on March 5, 2023 at the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on December 15, 1933 in Marseilles to Horace Latham Chandler and Vivian Margaret (Swinehart) Chandler. Raised in Marseilles Township and later resided in Upper Sandusky.
He was married to Margaret J. (Gottfried) August 18, 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Upper Sandusky and she preceded him in death on October 23, 2018. Surviving is a son Bruce E. Chandler, Upper Sandusky, and daughter Christine M. (Kenneth Huffman) Chandler of Hilliard, granddaughters Marissa, Kaitlin and Claire along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Mildred Chandler, Wanda (Fulscher) and Joyce (Lorenz).
Horace graduated from Marseilles High School in 1952. He was a US Army Veteran serving as an Army Engineer Specialist 3rd class from 1954 to 1956. He spent his second year on Eleuthera Airforce Base, Bahamas living in tents with no luxuries of television, radio, or newspapers. Horace helped build a half mile runway and worked in the generator building providing electricity for 100 plus tents.
He worked at U.S Concrete for 10 years and as the combine service manager at Schmidt Machine Company for 31 years while farming on weekends and evenings. Horace was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, American Legion #225 and life member of Farmers Union. He enjoyed gardening, helping neighbors and taking care of his golden retrievers.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 8, 2022 at 10:30am, in Bringman Clark Funeral Home with Rev. Elaine Clinger Sturtz officiating. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery, Marseilles with full military honors conducted by Upper Sandusky Color Guard. Horace Eugene along with his three sisters are fourth generation to be buried at Chandler Cemetery. Visitation held on Tuesday March from 4pm-6pm at funeral home.
