Maurice “Mike” A. Poland passed away Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Brookdale Assisted Living. He was born October 2, 1922 to Clyde and Jennie Mae (Ansley) Poland in Kenton, Ohio. Mike married the love of his life Patricia Ann Phillips on April 30, 1949 in Lima, Ohio. Pat preceded him in death on June 7, 2016.
Mike served his country in the Army during WWII and was part of the D-Day invasion at
Normandy, France. He was wounded July 6, 1944. After his recovery, he served as a POW guard and postal truck driver. Upon returning from the war, Mike used his GI bill to obtain his optician’s license and worked for White Haines Optical in Findlay, Pittsburgh and Lima until 1977 when he and Pat opened M.A. Poland Optical in Findlay. Mike retired after serving the community for many years. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time with his family and friends.
Mike is survived by his children Timothy C. Poland (Gerri Glass), Radford, VA; Jonathan P. Poland (Laurie) and Anne R. Bernot (Jim) , both of Findlay. He is survived by grandchildren Travis Poland (Erika), Lansing, MI; Ashley Flores, Toledo, OH; Michael Bernot, Columbus, OH; Ray Flores, Queen Creek, AZ, . Great-grandchildren, Adam Flores, Tiffin, OH., Jackson Flores and Bennett Flores both of Queen Creek, AZ. He was preceded in death by siblings Clara Garman, Marilyn Mcelree, Anna Mae Modd and Donald Poland; grandchildren Gabriel Poland and Katherine A. Bernot.
There will be a graveside service at 11:00 am on Friday, January 28, 2022 at Maple Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Patient Services, Findlay, Ohio or Life Connection of Ohio. Arrangements are being handled by COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME where condolences can be shared with the family at coldrencrates.com.
