Sandra S. (Borger) Schwartz, age 75, of Kenton passed away on March 21, 2021 following a brief illness.

She was born on March 28, 1945, in Kenton to the late Ernest and Edna (Eibling) Borger. She graduated from Hardin Northern High School in 1963 and the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. She married the late William (Bill) Schwartz of Kenton that year and they later divorced.

For 48 years, she was a registered nurse at Hardin Memorial Hospital in positions of increasing responsibility, retiring as Director of Nursing in 2011. As she told the Kenton Times of her nursing career, “I just liked taking care of people. I never wanted to be anything else.” In 2010, she received the OhioHealth Prism Award for Excellence, one of the most prestigious awards given state-wide for demonstrating Ohio Health’s core values in healthcare.

Surviving are her sister Alita (Tom) Frater of Bowling Green, daughter Melissa (Adam) Pollock of Brooklyn, NY, son Patrick (Charmaine Iwanski) of Akron, their daughters Coralei and Maren, and three nieces. She raised her children to be well-rounded people, supporting their varied interests in the arts and athletics and instilled in them her strong work ethic. She served a number of years as a 4-H club advisor and camp nurse. Since retirement, her love of taking care of people found its most joyful expression in her relationship with her granddaughters. To be their devoted ‘Grandma Sandy’ was her greatest happiness.

A private service is planned for Thursday, March 25, at Schindewolf-Stout-Crates Funeral Home in Kenton, followed by a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Pandemic safety protocols of masking and social distancing will be enforced. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hardin Memorial Hospital, 921 East Franklin Street, Kenton, Ohio 43326.  Online condolences can be shared by visiting stoutcrates.com.
