Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio has signed a letter to the National Institute of Mental Health urging the agency to prioritize efforts to study the pandemic’s effects on young people’s mental health.

Mason City Schools in the Cincinnati area reported the hospitalization of 15 students for suicidal thoughts during the pandemic, and one-in-four American adults between 18 and 24 have reported such thoughts over a similar timeframe.

Brown was one of 15 Democratic Senators to sign the letter, which was supported by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, to NIMH Director Joshua Gordon.
