State Patrol Investigating Fatal Crash in Putnam County

Pleasant Township – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lima Post is investigating a car vs. train fatal crash.

The crash occurred at 4:56 AM Tuesday morning, on Road N-8, in Putnam County, between Ottawa and Columbus Grove.

A 2011 Buick Lacrosse, driven by Victoria J. Barlage, age 63, of Glandorf, was eastbound on Road N-8.

Barlage’s car was struck by a southbound CSX train, engineered by John E. Mansfield, age 45, of Elida.

There was no damage to the train or railroad property.

Mansfield was not injured.

The Buick was heavily damaged.

Mrs. Barlage was pronounced dead, at the scene, by the Putnam County Coroner, Dr. Jennifer Maag.

The Highway Patrol was assisted, on scene, by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Ottawa Police Department, Putnam County Coroner’s Office, CSX Railroad Police, Ottawa
Fire, Putnam County EMS, Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home and Meyer’s Towing.

The train’s horn was used and headlights were on. The crossing gates were down and flashing, at the time of the crash.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, in the crash.

Mrs. Barlage was not wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation.
