The University of Northwestern Ohio is excited to announce a new Diesel Technology Associate Degree available beginning in the Fall of 2021 for students. The new associate degree will include classes necessary for students to become Professional level Mack and Volvo technicians upon completion of the program. This program is named Diesel Technology – Mack/Volvo DATE, with DATE standing for Diesel Advanced Technology Education.

UNOH currently offers two other Diesel Technology associate degrees. One with a focus on medium/heavy duty vehicles and the other, launched in the fall of 2020, with a primary focus light duty vehicles and engines.

Originally launched in 2019, the DATE program at UNOH consisted of 4 courses added on to the end of any Diesel Technology Associate Degree. This new program allows for the integration of DATE courses into an Associate Degree program which means students can complete the curriculum in a shorter time frame and enter the workforce sooner.

All of the UNOH Diesel Technology programs are in high demand as there is an ongoing shortage of skilled vehicle service technicians within the diesel industry. Current Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers indicate there will be an additional 24,000 job openings for diesel technicians within the next 8 years.

Students who enroll in the Diesel Technology – Mack/Volvo DATE program must maintain a 3.0 GPA and a 97% attendance record in their technical courses in order to begin the DATE specific classes. Students will also be screened for attitude, ability, and passion for the industry. Courses will include topics specific to Mack and Volvo engines focused on powertrains, electrical and electronic systems, chassis components and software and engine diagnosis and repair. The program includes theory, shop time, maintenance training, and testing.

Training aids for the program will reflect the most up-to-date Mack and Volvo models in the industry today. Courses will also be taught by dedicated OEM-master certified instructors at UNOH.

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared for immediate employment at any of the hundreds of Mack and Volvo truck dealerships across North America.
