An Upper Sandusky driver escaped injury in an accident that occurred Wednesday morning in Wyandot County.

According to the report from the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph Musgrave, age 23, was driving south on Township Highway 97 when a deer entered the roadway.

Musgrave swerved to miss the deer, and the car traveled to the left side of the road where it struck a metal post.

Functional damage occurred to the car.

Car/deer crashes are common this time of year, and while swerving to avoid hitting them is sometimes our first instinct, Hardin County Sheriff Keith Everhart said it’s important to train ourselves not to take evasive action, “ A lot of people tend to make matters worse when they swerve and end up off the road where they hit a tree or utility pole or travel left of center into oncoming traffic. If you are faced with the situation of deer entering the road into you path, just hit the deer.”

Sheriff Everhart spoke on WKTN’s Public Eye program that will air this weekend.
