Students in Lori Weyant’s classroom at Benjamin Logan Middle School are strengthening their understanding of mathematics through hands-on learning experiences made possible by a Logan County Education Foundation (LCEF) Dedicated Grant, sponsored by the Jones Family.
The grant funded instructional materials are designed to help students connect geometric models with algebraic reasoning.

These tools allow students to model algebraic expressions, represent equations on coordinate planes, explore area relationships, and visually demonstrate properties of operations. By using algebra tiles and coordinate grids together, students move fluidly between concrete representations and abstract symbolic reasoning.
“Providing students with visual and tactile models strengthens conceptual understanding,” said Weyant. “When students can physically build an expression and then graph or analyze it, they gain clarity and confidence in their mathematical thinking.”
The classroom implementation emphasizes collaboration, mathematical discourse, and problem-solving. Students are actively constructing expressions, identifying patterns, testing solutions, and explaining their reasoning to peers—skills that align directly with state standards for mathematical practice.
Benjamin Logan Local Schools extends sincere appreciation to the Logan County Education Foundation and the Jones Family for investing in resources that enhance instruction and create meaningful learning experiences for students.
