David Faulkner, a retired judge and longtime Rotarian celebrating his 60th year with Rotary, recently spoke to the Kenton Rotary Club about the similarities between governmental law and Rotary’s Four-Way Test.

Faulkner said he believes a lack of respect for one another and the law has contributed to the decline of society.

Rotary’s Four-Way Test encourages members to consider four questions when making decisions in business and everyday life:

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Faulkner also shared thoughts from his recent reading of Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, explaining that laws are necessary because society has not yet reached a point where people can consistently regulate their own behavior.

He compared the Four-Way Test to the spirit of the law, noting that both provide a framework for expected behavior and help people consider the consequences of their decisions.
