As Ohio’s crisp winter months approach, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is reminding everyone to prioritize safety while exploring the state’s stunning waterways. With colder weather comes added risks, making preparation and awareness essential for safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences.

“Ohio’s waterways are breathtaking year-round, but cold water presents unique and serious risks,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “By wearing a life jacket and planning ahead, you can turn a potential danger into a safe and memorable adventure. With the right precautions, your winter outings can be stories worth sharing.”

Water colder than 98.6°F – the body’s average temperature – accelerates heat loss, significantly increasing the risk of hypothermia. Cold water cools the body 25 times faster than air of the same temperature, making it a significant hazard for anyone venturing out onto Ohio’s waterways.

Statistics underscore the importance of preparedness: Nearly 90 percent of boating-related fatalities are the result of drowning, with almost half caused by immersion in cold water. A properly fitted life jacket is one of the simplest ways to prevent tragedy.

Here are some tips for staying safe boating on the water this winter:

  • Keep What Matters Afloat: Always wear a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. It keeps your airway above water and increases survival time in emergencies.
  • Dress for Success: Wear insulating and water-resistant layers to retain warmth in cold conditions.
  • File a Float Plan: Let someone know your plans, including where you’re going and when you expect to return.
  • Be Aware of Water Conditions: Check water and weather reports before heading out, and always be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

ODNR has created a Cold Water Safety video that demonstrates these principles to help you prepare for safe and enjoyable winter recreation.

Additional tips and resources for staying safe during winter adventures are available on the ODNR website at: Winter Recreation Safety.

Whether you’re gliding across a frozen river or fishing in the quiet solitude of a winter lake, ODNR urges everyone to take simple yet crucial steps to ensure your outdoor experiences remain both memorable and safe.
