An 8th grade Shawnee Middle School student recently competed in the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.
Ope Balogun was able to advance to the quarterfinals (round 5). She previously competed in the 2023 Spelling Bee competition as well. The 13 year old has also been actively representing her school in Quizbowl, Mathcounts, and Speech. The Shawnee community congratulated her on her achievements in DC.
At the 2024 event, there were 245 spellers who earned a spot at the national competition by advancing through regional spelling bees. These spellers compete against students from all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. Spellers included students from countries outside of the US, including the Bahamas, Canada and Ghana.
