Former Detective Warns of Sophisticated Fake Check Scam Targeting Local Residents

Retired Hardin County Sheriff’s Detective Dennis Alexander shared information about a widespread scam.

Anyone who received in the past few days an envelope with the logo of Ameriprise financial and found enclosed a notice that you won 2 million 3 thousand dollars in the Fortune 500 jackpot are being warned that it is a scam.

Enclosed in the envelope is a realistic looking check for just over $2800 made out in your name, which you are told to deposit.

When you receive a call back, you be told that you need to withdraw $1600 cash to pay for an activation code for your cashiers check and to call back when you have the money.

If you follow everything you are asked to do, the only thing you will receive is a bounced check call from your bank for the $2800 check you deposited.

This is a more sophisticated scam than usual because of the included check which is good enough that banks will initially accept it for deposit.
