The Benjamin Logan Environmental Science Club (ESC) continues to blend science learning with hands-on projects that promote health, stewardship, and practical skills.

In January, students explored the relative sizes of life forms, discovering how small bacteria and viruses are compared to the width of a human hair. Discussions focused on human health and ways to reduce the risk of microbial infection. A follow-up session in the coming weeks will address hygiene and healthful eating, including simple recipes students can prepare at home for their families.

During the club’s most recent meeting, students—with guidance—assembled a rain barrel and a bench to be installed near the elementary school garden. The rain barrel will capture and store rainfall for watering flowers and pollinator plants around the school, while the bench and a future pergola will help create an outdoor classroom space adjacent to the garden.

Students also learned about waterfowl, specifically wood ducks, including habitat, identification, and adaptations. Because wood ducks are cavity nesters and rely on human-built nesting structures, students used construction tools and joinery techniques to build wood duck boxes. The boxes will be installed this spring on posts in the school land lab, the Myeerah Preserve, and the Kirkmont Center. Students will monitor and maintain the nest boxes in the future.
