
James Edward Austin, age 74 of Kenton, passed away at his residence on Friday, June 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 16, 1950 in Dayton, Ohio to James and Regina (Sell) Austin, and they preceded him in death. He married Melissa (Taylor) Austin on July 11, 1987 and she survives.
Left to cherish his memory include children: Heather Fuller of Enon, James Eric Austin of Dayton; step children: Jennifer Prater (Ghalib ABU Rumman) of Findlay, Charles Prater (Celines Manchego) of Dunkirk; brothers and sisters: Patricia (Mike Fugate) Austin of Tipp City, Betty (Everett) Back of Middletown, John Austin of Dayton; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by children Nichlous Austin and Christopher Austin; siblings Billy Lee Austin and Janice Piercy.
James was a servicemember in the United States Army from November 1968 until December 1973, where he served with the 173 Airborne during the Vietnam War. After his faithful service with the Army, he transferred to the Ohio National Guard where he continued to serve his country from December 1973 until December 1987. James then worked for the City of Kenton Police Department for 15 years until his retirement from the police force. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1182 in Forest, member of the American Motorcycle Association, and member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed motorcycles, having barbeques with his family, and watching westerns. He loved spending time with his family and will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at SCHINDEWOLF-STOUT-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Kenton, with Pastor Dennis Burns officiating. Graveside services and military honors will follow at Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, June 27, 2025 from 5-7pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hardin County Veteran’s Service Commission in James’ honor. Condolences may be expressed online at stoutcrates.com.
