LaVerne Clayton Hughes, age 92, of Kenton, died on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Kenton Nursing and Rehab under hospice care.
He was born on August 4, 1933 to the late Herbert and Vivian (Wineman) Hughes. On May 22, 1958, LaVerne married Charlotte Smith who survives in Kenton.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Lucille (Pratt) Hughes, his sister Shirley (Hughes) Hudson, his son Kevin C. Hughes, and his brother-in-law Cecil A. DeLong.
LaVerne is survived by his wife of 67 years Charlotte (Smith) Hughes. He is survived by two sisters, Beverly DeLong and Sylvia LaCroix. Also surviving are his children; Keith (Robin) Hughes, Vivian (Scott) Hieatt, Stephanie (Michael) Hackman, Katrina (Rick) Collins, Kerry (Cindy) Hughes; his grandchildren; Keaton (Kimberly) Hughes, Connor Miles, Corey (Emma) Miles-Frey, Alex (Shelby) Hieatt, Kara Hieatt, Stephen Hackman, Christopher Hackman, Alison (Drew) Hohlt, Avery (Elizabeth) Collins, Zachery Collins, Kevin Hughes; and great grandchildren; Marvel Hughes, William and Addison Hohlt.
LaVerne graduated from Alger High School in 1951 where he had played basketball and baseball. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 and was stationed in Korea. LaVerne worked for 43 years for the railroad; Erie, Erie Lackawanna, and Conrail. He farmed and worked on cars.
LaVerne loved camping and always tried to go when he did not have to work. He hosted the camping club several times out at the farm where he was the happiest. He also had a love for roller coasters with several trips to Sandy Beach Amusement Park (Indian Lake), Cedar Point, Kings Island, and Disney World. LaVerne loved his family and spending time with family and friends.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Alger with Pastor Caleb Burkey officiating.
Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger with graveside military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Ada VFW Post #9381 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Hanson-Neely-Allison Funeral & Cremation Services, Alger and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Tuesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dollars For Scholarship and/or Kenton Epworth Community Church.
