Obituary for Mary Ellen Swartz

Mary Ellen (Butts) Swartz age 85 of Marion, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2026, at Sarah Moore Nursing Home, Delaware, surrounded by family and friends. Mary Ellen was born on Sept. 25, 1940, in Radnor, Ohio to the late Elward and Freida Butts. She graduated from Radnor High School in 1958 and from THE Ohio State University in 1962 with a B.S. in Education.

On July 21, 1962, she married the man she had met on a blind date at OSU, Dennis Swartz, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Both Mary Ellen and Dennis taught school at Paulding, Ohio before moving to the Marion area. Mary Ellen taught elementary and middle school students for nearly 30 years at Paulding, Marseilles, Grand Prairie, Mt. Zion and Wynford schools. She then supervised student teachers in conjunction with Mid-Ohio Service Center (M.O.E.S.C), Ashland College and Mt. Vernon Nazarene College completing 35 years in education upon retirement.

She was a life member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and a member of the Junior Service Guild, both in Marion, OH. She was also a life-long Buckeye and member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association.

Family was at the heart of Mary Ellen’s life. She treasured her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her son Rex (Vickie) Swartz; her daughters Christy (Todd) long and LeAnn (Corey) Schwartz.

Mary Ellen was a devoted Christian and was member of Emanuel Lutheran of Marion. Left to cherish her memory in addition to her husband and children are her grandchildren. Danielle (Luke) Bishop, Adam (Tarah) Schwartz, Brittany (Trevor) D’Ambrosi, Amanda Long, Lauren Long, Kyle (Christine) Swartz, and Morgan (Troy) Grauel. Great Grandchildren are Liam and Kiera Schwartz, Ella and Hazel Grauel, and Maya Swartz. In addition to her parents, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her brother Charles and sister Adalin.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00PM on Friday Sept. 25, 2026, at Bringman Clark Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, OH. The funeral will be held on Sat. Sept. 26, 2026, at 10:30AM in the Bringman Clark Funeral Home, also a visitation being held from 9:00AM-10:30AM before time of services. Rev. Tancey Addison will be the officiating pastor. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Upper Sandusky.
