The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating an injury crash that occurred Friday evening, at approximately 11:53 PM on State Route 4 near Hawk Road in Champaign County, Ohio.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, along with deputies from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the crash. At 11:54 PM, the first Champaign County deputies arrived on scene and discovered two infant children trapped inside a burning vehicle.

Deputies immediately acted and were able to remove the children from the vehicle moments before it became fully engulfed in flames. Both infants were transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling southbound on State Route 4 when it drifted off the right side of the roadway, struck a utility pole and an embankment, and subsequently caught fire.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The driver was placed under arrest for Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI).

State Route 4 was closed for approximately two hours during the crash investigation and vehicle removal.
