The Marion Police Department is reminding residents why swimming in the quarry is not a good idea.

In a social media post from earlier today, the department listed two reasons not to swim in the quarry: first, because it is illegal, and second, because “there are prehistoric beast living in there.”

The post accompanied a photo of a large snapping turtle that Marion Officer Geurkink rescued after finding it sitting in the middle of Joseph Street. The officer safely removed the turtle from the roadway and released it into the quarry, away from traffic.

Officials said that sometimes you never know what you will come across in their line of work.
