
PIQUA – The Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced on Thursday (July 2, 2026) that they are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash. The crash occurred on Wednesday, June 24, at approximately 6:34 p.m., on Interstate 75 near mile marker 92 in Clinton Township, Shelby County.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, operated by Melvin Howard, 86, Southfield, Mich., was traveling south on Interstate 75.
The Chevrolet traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch. After striking the ditch, the Chevrolet continued and overturned multiple times before striking a utility pole.
Howard was initially transported by ground ambulance to Wilson Health with life-threatening injuries. He was later transported by air ambulance to Miami Valley Hospital for further treatment.
On June 27, Howard succumbed to fatal injuries resulting from the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Piqua Post. Further investigation revealed that a second vehicle may have been involved in the crash.
