The Union County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about a scam that is targeting local residents.
Scammers are sending fake invoices that appear to come from the “Jerome Township Planning and development department” requesting payment by wire transfer.
Some RED FLAGS to watch for are misspelled words and poor grammar, unusual or incorrect dates and requests to pay by wire transfer.
If you receive an “official” invoice or document that doesn’t seem right, contact the township or agency directly using a phone number or e-mail that you look up yourself, but do not use the contact information provided on the invoice.
While the current reports appear to involve Jerome Township, this type of scam can be directed at any resident, business, or township, and the sheriff’s office encourages everyone to stay vigilant, regardless of where you live.
