OSHP to Enforce Safe Driving Over Labor Day Weekend

COLUMBUS – Over the upcoming Labor Day Weekend, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) will be focusing on removing impaired drivers from roadways across the state.

The Patrol’s 2026 Labor Day reporting period began today, September 4 at midnight and concludes on Monday, September 7 at 11:59 p.m.

“We want everyone to enjoy the Labor Day holiday, but do so responsibly,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent. “That means designating a sober driver before you go out, ensuring all occupants are wearing their safety belt and putting all distractions away before you drive.”

During the 2025 Labor Day holiday weekend, 23 fatal crashes occurred on Ohio roadways, resulting in 27 deaths. Of those fatal crashes, 15 were OVI-related. Of the 17 fatalities where safety belts were available, 11 were unbelted. Additionally, troopers made 402 arrests for impaired driving and issued 156 citations for speeds of 100 miles-per-hour or more.
